November build update from The Ark
03 DECEMBER 2018
As 2018 draws to a close, our Building the Ark project is going from strength to strength. This month, our build team have been working hard on one of the key features of our building – our environmentally-friendly green roof.
Bridgman and Bridgman have used their expertise to install our green roof and as such create a “garden in the sky”. PV panels have also been installed on the roof which almost completes the building envelope. We have come a long way since the first brick was laid in March!
As well as the roof, our build team have been working flat out on the interior of the hospice. Our top notch contractors K&B have been applying dry lining to the walls in the south wing of the hospice. For those of you not familiar with the term ‘dry lining’, it is sometimes referred to as ‘drywalling’ and is a system for cladding the internal faces of buildings, such as walls and ceilings. Plasterboard is attached to the internal faces, creating a smooth surface that finishes such as paint can be applied to directly.
October saw the start of the work on the MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), which has been superbly coordinated by GEM Construct Ltd. We are pleased to report that fantastic progress has been made on the MEP in space of four weeks with 95% of the first fix completed. This is a tremendous achievement and shows how quickly and efficiently our build team are working to get the job done on time and to a high standard.
Birch Screeding have continued applying their skills to the North Block. To recap, screeding is a process whereby a thin, top layer of material (sand and cement, magnesite or calcium sulphate), is poured in site on top of the structural concrete or insulation, on top of which other finishing materials can be applied.
As well as the crucial works being carried out on site, our team have also been working on key off-site utility work, which will ensure that our hospice site has fully functional gas and electricity. Last and certainly not least, none of this great work could have been done without the expert coordination skills of Phil Juniper and Jimmy Miller of 8build.
We will keep you posted on further developments so please check back next month for more updates!
